South of Midnight: Graphical Love, Everything we know so far

Goddamn, have you seen the reveal trailer for South of Midnight? It’s mind-blowing! Xbox Games Showcase 2023 gave us a morsel of this new third-person action-adventure game developed by Compulsion Games. And let me tell you, it looks to be a gem! Set in a magical realist version of the American South, this game has got some seriously gorgeous vibes. The trailer introduced us to Hazel, the badass heroine on a mission to take down supernatural creatures that have invaded the world. But there’s so much more to discover, my friends.

“Magic Realism is, is one of the calling cards of Southern Gothic, it’s a license to actually put magic in the modern world, and to have creatures there that are just accepted. We’re not going to give you an information dump in the game, and that’s in the spirit of Magic Realism, right? We’re explaining enough that you will just accept it.”

South of Midnight is bringing us a game world inspired by the most fascinating aspects of the South – the geography, culture, society, and history. It’s all there, wrapped up in a magical package. In an interview with Xbox Wire, David Sears described it as “Magic Realism is, is one of the calling cards of Southern Gothic, it’s a license to actually put magic in the modern world, and to have creatures there that are just accepted. We’re not going to give you an information dump in the game, and that’s in the spirit of Magic Realism, right? We’re explaining enough that you will just accept it.”

Graphical Love: The captivating allure of stylized graphics, surpassing the realms of photorealism?

The team is creating a world that’s new and exciting for players, while also paying homage to the real-life South through a Gothic lens. They wanted to give the South the recognition it deserves, showcasing its sultry, mysterious vibes in all its glory. The game will take you on a journey through rural areas, away from the busy cities, where wonder and danger lurk around every corner. David shared stories of his own adventures in forgotten farms and abandoned places in Mississippi, discovering relics from the Civil War, the Great Depression, and some downright eerie shit like doll heads nailed to trees. And that’s the kind of weirdness you can expect from South of Midnight.

But let’s talk about Hazel! She has potential to be one hell of a protagonist. Confident, witty, and on a goddamn mission. She’s grown up in the town of Prospero, a place left behind by society, and she’s taken it upon herself to be the protector. But she’s not just some generic hero, or damsel in distress. Compulsion Games wanted to create a character who feels real, with her own struggles and complexities. Hazel’s got a complex relationship with her mother, she’s faced failure multiple times, and she’s pissed off about the injustice in the world. She’s sarcastic and disillusioned, using humor as a coping mechanism. Now no matter who you are you can certainly appreciate those qualities, however, let’s not forget the importance of representation here – seeing a Black woman as the main character in a game like this is still a rare sight(Dishonored Death of the Outsider being the last one in my memory). The team felt the weight of this responsibility and made sure to have proper representation in their narrative team to bring Hazel to life authentically. None of that modern day woke bs that totally misrepresents people of color and even causes more division than anything else.

South of Midnight has some astonishing visuals….

But wait, there’s more. We also got a glimpse of this mysterious character called Shakin’ Bones. He’s an Archon, kinda like an immortal figure. He’s inspired by the legend of Robert Johnson, the guy who supposedly sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads. That’s some creepy shit. Shakin’ Bones acts as a guide for Hazel, taking her from the real world to a more fantastical place. And get this, he even performs a blues song in the trailer. Music is gonna play a big role in South of Midnight, which is dope because we all know how important a good soundtrack is.

Let’s not forget about the creatures Hazel will encounter along her journey. The Altamaha-ha, inspired by real-life folklore from the Deep South, is just one example. Compulsion Games drew from the rich cultural mix of the region, which includes European, Caribbean, and African storytelling, to create a unique menagerie of supernatural threats. And these creatures? They’re something else. Based on Sears’ own childhood experiences and stories from his grandmother, Compulsion Games has injected their own twist and interpretation into these creatures, making them truly fascinating. Give anyone else Alice in Wonderland vibes???

South of Midnight is shaping up to be a masterpiece, my friends. So buckle up and get ready to immerse yourselves in a magical, weird, and captivating world.
